The power of “Children of Siberia” is perhaps precisely that it always has children at the center (in the broadest sense of the word). This aspect makes the project always relevant, new and growth-oriented. Generations change, views and attitudes change, but the theme remains alive.
Children and young people are increasingly turning to such a complex task: to visually experience human suffering, depicting events that are only imagined in memoirs and a few photographs. With this competition, the “Children of Siberia” Foundation successfully encourages the creation of a creative space in Latvian schools, where, through the cooperation of teachers, families and, of course, the children and young people themselves, the attitude of each future generation towards painful historical issues should be formed. It seems that this could be a very useful practice and experience if we think about the formation of collective memory and national self-awareness.
As the years pass, the view on the theme becomes more generalized. Some strong, simplified symbols stand out: wagons, barbed wire, darkness, blood. At the same time, the special value of personal, individualized memories also stands out. These features can also be observed in the works of the 2026 competition.
Speaking of the professional level of the works, it is worth highlighting the skill of many authors to create complex compositions with human figures, the diversity of technical means, and – especially – the ability of young artists to rise above an illustrative, simplified view, to create effective artistic images and symbols.
The competition this year also covered the whole of Latvia – among both the submitted and awarded works, Vidzeme and Latgale, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Sēlija were represented.
While working on the jury, it was not easy to choose the laureates from the large range of works, however, the joy of the presence of many talents prevails, as well as gratitude to the organizers and participants for the time and love invested. Because – there are things that need to be talked about again and again, things that simply must not be forgotten. Siberia remains Siberia and children remain children – always. Always anew.
